Impaired Driving

Impaired driving remains one of the most preventable causes of injury and death on Texas roads. Each year, too many lives are cut short because someone got behind the wheel after drinking or using drugs. Alcohol and cannabis are the substances most often linked to impaired driving—and both are among the most commonly used by young people.

The Power of Prevention

TxDOT ad - DWI can ruin your changes

TxDOT reminds young drivers that impaired driving can affect their futures.

Preventing youth substance use prevents impaired driving.

Research shows that young people who use alcohol or cannabis early are more likely to drive under the influence or ride with someone who’s under the influence. Using these substances impairs their judgment, coordination, and reaction time—putting themselves and others at risk.

Our Approach

We’re working with communities throughout Texas to:

  • Promote awareness of how youth substance use and impaired driving are connected

  • Support enforcement of underage drinking and cannabis laws to keep substances out of young hands

  • Encourage parents and caring adults to start open, honest conversations about substance use and safe choices

  • Collaborate with others to strengthen prevention strategies and create safer environments for youth

Impaired driving can have consequences that reach far beyond the crash.

An impaired driving arrest or conviction can affect college admissions, financial aid, scholarships, and even job opportunities. Preventing youth substance use means protecting young people’s futures—and giving them every chance to succeed.

Zero Tolerance Law

Zero. Zilch. Nada.

In Texas, Zero Tolerance means exactly that — anyone under 21 who drives with any detectable amount of alcohol in their system is breaking the law. It’s not just about punishment — it’s about prevention, education, and saving lives before crashes happen.

Under 21 means zero alcohol

Our Approach

We help make our roads safer by:

  • Educating youth and parents about the real risks and legal consequences of driving after any amount of drinking or substance use

  • Working with communities to promote awareness of Texas’ Zero Tolerance Law and why it matters

  • Supporting enforcement efforts that keep roads safe and hold underage drivers accountable

  • Promoting prevention — because the best way to prevent impaired driving is to stop underage drinking and substance use before it starts
