Why We Care About Protecting Youth

Every young person deserves the chance to grow up healthy, safe, and supported. But too often, our kids are up against a world that makes risky choices seem normal—and even appealing. Their brains and bodies are still developing, making them especially vulnerable to the effects of alcohol, cannabis, and tobacco.

Early exposure to alcohol, cannabis, and tobacco puts kids at risk—in ways that can affect them for years to come. Youth substance use can:

  • Interfere with brain development

  • Affect learning and decision-making

  • Increase the risk of addiction and mental health challenges later in life

It’s not a child’s job to protect themselves from the products we allow into their world. It’s ours.

At Texans for Safe and Drug-Free Youth, we believe our kids shouldn’t have to fight against the odds—or against billion-dollar industries—to stay safe. When business interests come before children’s safety, our kids pay the price.

Listen to experts from Boston University discuss how alcohol advertising affects youth.

Texans for Safe and Drug-Free Youth believes that kids deserve:

  • Communities that put their safety first

  • Adults who protect, not profit off, their choices

  • Support to make healthy decisions

  • A future free from addiction and harm

Why Access Matters

The easier it is for youth to get alcohol, cannabis, or tobacco, the more likely they are to use them—and the earlier they start, the greater the risk for long-term harm. Research shows that when access goes up, so does use.

We focus on proven, evidence-based strategies to reduce access and prevent use. Our approach includes:

  • Strengthening local and statewide policies

  • Partnering with community coalitions and organizations

  • Supporting parents

  • Empowering youth

Reducing access doesn’t just stop early use—it gives kids room to grow, dream, and build the kind of future they deserve. Together, we’re creating the safe, supportive environments every young Texan needs to thrive.
